Description

a dalmatian i knew.

acrylic on canvas, 8 x 10

this is my first real experience with acrylics. there are some things i wish i'd known about how acrylics work before i'd started this, but i learned a lot. i'll definitely experiment more with acrylics in the future.

advanced critique is welcome and encouraged, particularly with regards to the medium. this is a scan, and the colors aren't exactly accurate - they're more saturated in the original, particularly the greens, and in fact i think the more muted colors in the scan look better. my biggest challenge was mixing paint - i've been spoiled by photoshop. toward the end of this i was more accurate with paint mixing, as i was becoming more familiar with the way acrylics behave. i'm not looking so much for input on composition or dog anatomy, as i'm quite satisfied with the way she turned out in that respect. any critique is welcome, but any tips on paint mixing (in particular, desaturating tube colors without sacrificing depth of color) would be most appreciated.

When I had my painting class, I desaturated my colors by thinning the paint and doing a light wash of the color's opposite sometimes, other's a touch of gray, but it's pretty tricky to not end up with a muddy color. >.< I don't know the term for it but there is a medium you use to thin acrylic and postpone the drying time which can give you the window to layer different colors to try and bring the tone down from crayon bright.
